Best Marketing campaigns of 2021

Rob Swinburne

December 15th, 2021

2021 is almost over! It’s been another strange year in the marketing landscape and in general. To round up the year we’re going to take a look at the best marketing campaigns from the past year.

Coca-Cola’s Message’s from Santa

Few do marketing quite as well as Coke, especially around Christmas. Coke’s advertising using Santa goes back to the 1920s but rather than a traditional advert like most years they decided to shake things up a little bit. They partnered with the app Cameo where people can pay for personalised messages from their favourite celebrities and gave consumer’s the chance to get a video greeting from Santa himself!

Aldi’s Free Cuthbert Message

Aldi might not be your first thought when you think of great marketing but the brand has proven time and time again they are creative geniuses with marketing and not afraid to have a little fun with it too. Their new #FreeCuthbert managed to flip what was a potentially negative situation and turn it on its head.

Marks & Spencer’s launched legal action against Aldi claiming the brand’s Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake infringed the copyright of Colin the Caterpillar cake. Rather than just deal with the complexities of law Aldi saw an opportunity, they took to Twitter and in a matter of hour Aldi and #FreeCuthbret was the top trending topic.

Starburst Revives an Old Ad

Starburst released its TV ad Berries and Cream in 2007, it’s a strange video and show’s just how different things were 14 years ago. Many probably forgot about the ad but thing’s on the internet are never gone. Come August 2021 the brand’s video had amassed over 1 billion views on TikTok.

The brand took full advantage of the strange video’s revival and introduced new hashtags, new berries and cream song and even a Halloween costume of the character featured in the ad.

Guinness’ Welcome Back

Every brand wants their ad to go viral on social media but few ever achieve it. Guinness had a much smaller idea that perfectly honed in on their target audience but still ended up with over 130k views on youtube.

Their Welcome Back ad was short, sweet and humble, celebrating the reopening of pubs across the country. After the isolation and struggle’s of 2020, the brand nailed the feeling’s and emotions across the nation as thing’s started to reopen.

Spotify Embracing Memes

If you’ve been on the internet you’ve seen a meme, even if you don’t know what the word means. In simple terms, a meme is a joke or image shared online that becomes widespread and popular. Spotify decided to give meme culture a go with their everywhere campaign.

Using a range of meme format’s to capture all the different mood’s and emotions their listeners have in their playlists. The feel-good campaign was not only a success for the brand but got very positive reactions. In a world where brand identity and feeling personal are more important than ever, Spotify aced it.
