A new multi-million pound data centre, Stellium, is set to open in North Tyneside and reports say that it has the potential to transform the North East into a world-leading digital hub.
The centre will provide data storage facilities for all kinds of companies, whether they are regional, national or international. It will need so much power in its process that it will have its own power supply from the National Grid, along with a crucial back-up system to make sure it is never offline.
Irish businessman, Noel Meaney, is CEO at Stellium. He has invested profoundly in the opening of the new centre, which is on Cobalt Business Park, North Tyneside. He has a successful history in business, having started global companies such as euNetworks and Citadel100. Mr Meaney said: “We are in an age when the data centre has become a powerhouse of modern business. The way we store, manage, manipulate and move data is driving and creating new market opportunities, whether it’s convergence and cloud computing, or big data and the Internet of Things. “Data centres are the hub of modern business operations and can no longer be viewed simply as a commodity. Instead, they have evolved to become a strategic business asset. For cities that have this sort of infrastructure, it can be transformational.”
As well as being welcomed by Newcastle City Council leader, Nick Forbes, the opening of the Stellium centre has been supported by £2.5m from the North East Investment Fund, which is administered by the North East LEP. The Innovation Director of the North East LEP, Hans Moller, said: “Infrastructure in terms of data centres and fibre networks across the region is in high demand, particularly as the North East has the fastest growing tech sector outside London. “We are committed to supporting ‘game changing’ projects to meet this demand and we look forward to seeing the benefits North East businesses will reap from this world class connectivity upgrade.” As well as providing this fantastic new data centre, Stellium has invested in a 25-mile fibre network in Newcastle, giving a significant boost to the rapidly-developing tech scene in the city. When the Stellium data centre is fully running, the profile of the North East in the tech world is set to rocket.
