When you have the responsibility of managing a business’ social media account, there is a lot to juggle at once if it is going to be a success.

We’ve already taken you through a series of hiccups you should now know not to make (see here if you missed the last social media mistakes blog), so you’re well on your way to being a stand-out social media professional. With these last few tips, you’ll have all you need to make a real difference online and dramatically boost a business’ social media presence, confidently overcoming any obstacles you might face.

It’s not all about you!

Sometimes, if there is a huge public affair, it’s okay for your business page to comment on it and bring something different to your page. It’s always a good idea, though, to keep it relevant to your business. For example, the Olympics this year saw a shift in the way they marketed the games. The Olympics don’t directly have a connection with online marketing or web design, but we – as a marketing company – found this point interesting and thought it appropriate to share with our followers. It wouldn’t have been right to sit in front of the TV and Tweet from our business account about who our favourite athlete in the games is, because it’s just not relevant or helpful to our following. However, the marketing side of things really sparked an interest for us.

Grammatical and spelling mistakes

This might seem like an obvious one, but even on social media, businesses should maintain high standards of grammar and punctuation. Seeing sloppy posts that are riddled with mistakes will be an instant turn-off for many potential customers, and it takes so little time to proofread posts that it’s not worth the loss of business in the long run.

Be genuine, be interesting, be proactive, abide by the rules and you can’t go wrong!

While there are hundreds of mistakes you can make when using social media for your business, there are also so many wonderful ways it can help you. If you’re genuine with your following and proactive in gaining brand awareness and keeping people interested in what you have to offer, you’ll find yourself starting to grow online in no time. It takes persistence – and of course, abiding by the rules of these social media platforms – but social media is one of the most powerful, interactive and fun marketing tools there is. Enjoy it! Plan each post with care, consider every decision you have to make and remember – just one little mistake could cost you your reputation.
